Welcome! I’m Melody Vang-Jilka

How my photography journey started...

Growing up in an artsy and creative family, I was always surrounded by the different talents and interests that my family had and it was always intriguing to me how we explored and created whether individually or together. I eventually picked up photography as a hobby in high school and began to take it more seriously in college, this was where I was able to explore and ultimately got hooked on to taking photos more frequently. While earning my degree and filling my creative cup, I became the photographer for the Inclusion and Diversity Department at my university, where I had the opportunity to photograph numerous events and phenomenal social and civil rights activist guest speakers. What felt so meaningful about this role was how deeply it aligned with who I am. With a background in Social Work and my empathetic nature, I’ve always been drawn to spaces rooted in care, connection, and advocacy.

I was also selected to be featured on my university's Art Magazine, Satori, for three consecutive years. During the last year of my undergrad, my work was chosen to be on the front page of Satori!!! It was such a huge milestone, and yes, my friends and I definitely grabbed more copies than we should have.

I don’t take photos to just take photos, taking photos is creating art for me. From the beginning to the very end, to capturing the moment, to the editing - everything is curated to the feeling and vision. As an artist behind the lens, I firmly believe in not limiting myself. I really enjoy the liberation from limitations. Getting to capture moments in my personal and professional life will always be part of who I am, and I would be honored to help bring your vision to life alongside you.

The visual storyteller behind the lens of M.V. Captures. I am based in Minneapolis, MN but am available worldwide and more than happy to travel to wherever your story takes us.

Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From the days of disposable cameras and trips to the store to develop photos, I’ve always found joy in capturing moments and preserving memories. With over 10 years of experience, including 7 years as a professional, photography is more than just taking pictures to me. It’s about freezing time and holding onto the people, phases of life, and the emotions we’ve experienced. Memories are incredibly precious to me.

For me, photography is a way to create, explore, and connect. It’s about helping others relive important moments and ensuring those memories stay alive for years to come. It’s truly an honor to help people capture and share their stories.
